Before the Surgery
Please arrange an escort to take you home.
Do not wear make-up, perfume or aftershave. Wash you hair on the day of surgery and wear clean, comfortable clothing covering arms and legs as you will not get changed.
Arrive 1 hour prior to your scheduled procedure.
Remember to bring your unopened eye drops/ ointment with you.
You will walk in and out of theatre.
Surgery takes approximately 60 minutes. Overall time at the centre is approximately 2.5 hours.
The operation will be done under local anaesthetic, with sedation given by an Anaesthetist.
Please bring sunglasses with you to wear home after the surgery. You will have your eye padded after surgery. The eye pad will be removed the following day.
You may experience pain some discomfort or irritation when the anaesthetic wears off. You can take Panadol or Nurofen as directed. A prescription for stronger pain relief will be provided by your Doctor on the day of surgery.
You cannot drive for 24 hours after surgery and MUST be escorted home by an adult.
Rest on the day of surgery.
After the Surgery
Eye drops and other post operative instructions will be provided the day after surgery.
It is normal to experience pain and blurry vision after surgery. Use pain relief as directed.
Your vision may fluctuate for several weeks after surgery. New glasses will not be prescribed until the vision has stabilised.
The cornea is slow to heal and can take some months to settle down. Eye drops may need to be used on and off over this period.
Avoid wind and sunlight by wearing sunglasses.
Showering may resume the day after surgery, taking care around the eye area.
Eye make-up can be worn 4 weeks after surgery.
You will usually be able to return to work approximately two weeks after surgery.
No heavy lifting or prolonged bending for 7 to 10 days.
Dusty / dirty environments should be avoided for 2 weeks following surgery.
Golf & bowls may be resumed 2 weeks after surgery. Tennis, jogging and water sports may be resumed 3 to 4 weeks after surgery.
