What happens on the first consultation . . .
Our doctors are specialist Ophthalmologists. The Medicare system requires you to have a letter of referral. You can get this from your local family doctor or an Optometrist. On arrival, your details will be entered into our system and an Orthoptist will commence the preliminary part of the consultation.
As part of a normal eye exam , we check for Cataracts, Glaucoma and Macular Degeneration.
A medical history is taken, glasses measured , an eye sight test performed and new glasses prescribed, if needed. Next, anaesthetic eye drops are put into the eyes for the intra ocular pressure and corneal thickness measurements. Both these procedures are quick and painless. A second drop is put into the eyes which dilates the pupils. Depending on the complaint and reason for your visit, further diagnostic tests will be performed before you see the eye doctor. Some of these incur extra costs and this will be explained.
With the pupils dilated the doctor will complete the rest of the eye examination . This involves looking at the back of the eye to check the retina, blood vessels, optic nerve and macula. Your vision will be blurry for 2-3 hours so please bring a dark pair of sunglasses with you.
