Dr Richard Smith

Dr Smith is an expert in the field of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. He is a general Ophthalmologist who is well respected amongst his peers.

He has performed many thousands of surgical procedures including laser, intraocular lens, glaucoma and general eye surgery. Having been at the forefront of Ophthalmology he was involved in the early development of Day Surgery in Australia and has a strong commitment to utilising the latest technology and surgical techniques used worldwide. Dr Smith was one of the early pioneers of Laser Eye Surgery in Australia.

Dr Smith is currently involved in teaching other Ophthalmologists Refractive Surgery skills, as part of the Masters of Medicine (Refractive Surgery) course run through The University of Sydney.

Dr. Smith is a graduate of Sydney University Medical School and also completed a degree in computer science, mathematics and physics at the University of New South Wales.

He trained in Ophthalmology at St Thomas’ Hospital London & the Royal Victorian Eye Hospital in Melbourne.

Dr. Smith is a member of many National and International Ophthalmic Associations. Over the years he has presented many papers at conferences both locally & internationally.

He was inaugural chairman of the Ophthalmic Day Surgery Centres Association and is the Ophthalmology representative on the National Day Surgery Committee. He is currently a director of the ION group Independent Ophthalmic Network.

Together with Dr Kearns, he established the Sydney Eye Specialist Centre in 1985. It is one of the first independent eye surgery centres in Australia.
